Should I Move or Remodel? – The Ultimate Checklist

January 15, 2024
move homes or remodel home

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the decision to remodel your home? Do you think that moving just may be easier?

To answer these questions first think about your attachment to the home you’re thinking of remodeling, will your renovations be a good investment, and are you able to comfortably afford a new home.

There are several issues you should think about when making this big decision:

How emotionally attached are you to your home?

Think about your neighbors and your relationship with them. Would it be hard to leave them? And, how do you feel about the area you live in? Is the area your home in close to your favorite shopping areas, or is it too close to your neighbors? Is the school your children are zoned for the one you’re in love with? These may be good ideas to start thinking about remodeling.

Are you good at budgeting?

It’s a must to be able to budget well when it comes to a remodel. It will be important to stick to your budget, and to keep in mind that as you go you may decide on different materials, possibly throwing your budget out of whack. If budgeting is not your thing, purchasing a new home may be the right choice for you.

How much room do you really need?

Are you looking for more room, or do you need more rooms? Talk to a contractor or home designer about what your needs really are. If you can fit in extra space without adding extra square footage, or make two rooms out of one room, problem solved – remodel.

How much time do you have?

Renovation just take time, and many times longer than you expected. So, if you have the energy to deal with the length of time a remodel will take, as well as not having a fully functioning kitchen or bathroom. If you don’t have the patience for this – it’s time to call a realtor.

Are you interested in customizing?

You have an idea of how you want your home to function and to look, and if you’re thinking of unique features you’d like to have in your home it may be a good idea to seriously think about remodeling and adding those one of a kind features.
